Can you swim in the ocean waters of Oregon and Washington beaches?

It’s possible, but maybe not the best idea. Northwest ocean waters can be very cold, even in the summer months. Rough conditions and deadly rip currents mean that ocean swimming isn’t safe in some areas, even for the most tolerant of swimmers.
Submerged rocks and debris can also make swimming hazardous. You’ll see surfers and bodyboarders out on the water, but these are well-trained swimmers with flotation devices.
Always remain cautious when near the ocean. Sneaker waves can strike at any time, so keep a close eye on kids and remember to never turn your back on the ocean.
