SEASIDE — The History and Hops series presented by the Seaside Museum with the support of Seaside Public Library continues 6 p.m. April 24 at the Times Theatre and Public House at 133 Broadway. Admission is free.
This week’s program highlights the “Willard Incident” of Dec. 30, 1898, which left two Seaside residents and the Clatsop County sheriff dead.
Sheriff John “Jack” Williams was the first Oregon sheriff killed in the line of duty. What started as a routine investigation earlier in the day ended in tragedy. Local author Mike Leamy will discuss the event, recreated from reports from the era, including elements of the paranormal and the macabre.
Leamy survived the Vanport Flood of 1948 and grew up on a pioneer farm in the hills east of Corbett, Ore. He manages Greenwood Cemetery on Highway 202 south of Astoria.
On the same night, the Seaside Museum’s annual membership meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m.
The History and Hops series, which takes place on the last Thursday of the month, concludes May 29; it will resume in September.
Preserving Seaside’s history since 1974, the Seaside Museum and Historical Society at 570 Necanicum Drive in Seaside is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. For details of museum activities, log on to www.seasideoregonmuseum.com
