- Pianist David Vest, who has written songs recorded by Tammy Wynette, will perform Sunday.
Music promoter Bill Svendsen is hosting a blues and jazz weekend. Svendsen is the guiding light behind the Peninsula Arts Center in Long Beach. Concerts are planned Saturday and Sunday at the center on Pacific Avenue.
Saturday’s jazz show will showcase Jamie Stillway and Eric Skye. It starts at 4 p.m.; doors open at 3:30 p.m.
Stillway was named by Fretboard Journal as “one of the top fingerstyle guitarists of her generation” and Skye was hailed by Premier Guitar as a “virtuosic guitarist with improvisational telepathy.” Their debut album was titled “Home on the Midrange.”
They also have recorded “Over the Waterfall,” a collection of traditional old-time fiddle tunes.
Sunday’s 4 p.m. blues show has a Canadian flavor. It will feature acoustic guitarist Terry Robb and boogie-woogie piano player David Vest in an album-release party for their new recording, “CrissCross.”
Robb, born in Vancouver, British Columbia, has performed on the Long Beach Peninsula annually since 2016. He is a member of both the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame. He has worked with Maria Muldaur and Joe Cocker and appeared on TV with Curtis Salgado on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.”
Vest, who was born in Alabama, lives in Victoria, B.C. He has won Canada’s national Maple Blues Award for Piano Player of the Year six times. He has performed with Bo Diddley and Slim Pickens and is a songwriter responsible for Tammy Wynette’s early recordings.
Svendsen is excited about the two days of music. “It’s always been our goal to bring world-class musicians to our local audiences, and these artists definitely fit the bill,” he said. “And our listening room provides an intimate, comfortable place to fully experience their artistry.”
