Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa appears to float on the Columbia River, that salute red and pinstripe gray Uniontown respite recognizable by drivers crossing the Astoria Bridge.

An immersive guest experience at the hotel begins with a greeting from “The Big Catch,” a bronze statue inspired by a cannery worker from the days of yore when its docks housed the Union Fishermen’s Cooperative Packing Co. in the late 19th century.

On the creaky creosote docks, fresh vigor of the mighty Columbia fills the lungs. And new additions have arrived at the 2005-built hotel, following extensive renovations. Updates include a new spa, kitchen, fitness studio, event spaces and a “Hall of History,” curated in partnership with the Clatsop County Historical Society.

Three treatment rooms in the spa offer massage, facials, waxing and a new feature aptly named the “relaxation lounge.” The full kitchen build-out — extending into a reimagined front entrance — plans to feature small plates, flat bread and oyster shooters among other delights.

The hotel will continue to offer its signature chauffeur service into downtown Astoria, with a choice of a 1962 Rambler or a 1959 Silver Cloud Rolls Royce. Settling in, every room offers a view, and the hotel prides itself on local touches throughout.

Bar 600, another addition, will give a nod to the hotel’s locale, reaching 600 feet into the Columbia. The bar is set to hold a cozy seating area, partial wraparound deck and indoor balcony seating.

Set the stage — gray mist settling in over the river on a cold winter’s eve at a table for two in front of a fireplace, sipping a warm drink as freighters loom large, drifting through the shipping channel.
