Quinault storyteller Harvest Moon will speak at KALA on Friday.

ASTORIA — Quinault storyteller Harvest Moon, the niece of late artist Eugene Landry, will speak at KALA at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Moon’s stories will reference her ancestor, Charles Cultee of Bay Center, Washington, who helped German anthropologist Franz Boas during his West Coast research in the 1890s.

Boas studied differences in regional tribes with patriarchal and matriarchal hierarchies. He is credited with analyzing and helping others preserve traditional languages, including language of the Chinook tribes.

Her presentation has been scheduled to accompany an art exhibit by Landry and four contemporary artists from the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe, on display at the Astoria Visual Arts through Dec. 2.

The exhibit features memoirs written by Shoalwater Bay tribe members who used Landry’s art as a writing prompt, plus a short documentary about Landry’s life by tribal filmmaker Erik Sanchez.

Landry, who died in 1988, was a disabled artist who painted portraits of the Shoalwater Bay tribe during a key era in their modern history. Doors open at 7 p.m., admission is $20, online in advance at www.kalaastoria.com.
