Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra started playing three years ago, performing O’Reilly’s originals and new renditions of rarities gleaned from the backwaters of the American songbook. Since then, the band has magnetized a dedicated following. Live, they perform with electrifying authenticity, generating a sound that is unique and yet intimately familiar.
“Preach ’Em Now!” is the band’s second studio effort, released on RANDM records, following 2014’s full-length “Pray For Rain.” The simple arrangements — performed by Chris Lynch on electrified violin, Matt Geoff on drums and Ben Berry on upright bass — lay a foundation highlighting O’Reilly’s lyricism.
At times, darkly esoteric (“Stop leaving me out for the wolves / Gonna see them just foaming at the mouth / Three up in the hills and one inside of the house”) and wistfully heartfelt (“Drunk lovers / clearly still lovers / clearly still drunk, too”) O’Reilly’s songs are subtle, relatable and infectious.

O’Reilly’s voice scrapes through the album leading the songs with a timbre that sounds hoarse after a long day of yearning prayer, or after a long night of hard drinking. His singing is both robust and delicate. The band’s dynamic range parries his vocals, turning on a dime from barn burning roots music to tender string arrangements.
