SEAVIEW, Wash. – Theater lights in the open-beamed ceiling of Seaview’s Sou’wester Lodge will once again shine down on performers of the Heartsparkle Theater at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

The unusual company is the only one of its kind to play in the Lower Columbia region. Based in Olympia, Wash., the Heartsparkle Players use the “playback” dramatic technique developed by Jonathan Fox and The Original Playback Company in New York. Using “playback,” audience members who wish are invited to tell stories from their lives or imaginations. They then watch them immediately performed back with music, movement and dialog. Each performance is unique, according to Len Atkins of the Sou’wester. “People who share their stories find the experience respectful, life-affirming and validating,” said Atkins. “Since first performing at the Sou’wester in 1999, audience response has ranged from gales of laughter to tender moments of silent reflection.”

The theme of Saturday’s performance is “Past Recollections, Future Hopes.” Director, performer and educator Debe Edden studied with Fox and was honored for her work as one of eight outstanding women who made a significant contribution to Thurston County, where she resides.

As social activists, the Heartsparkle players strive to contribute to the fabric of society. They have worked with all age groups from preschool children to senior citizens. The performers and the Sou’wester are providing their services free of charge and everyone is welcome. Admission is by voluntary donation to charity. Light refreshments will be provided.
