Flutes join strings for classical masterpieces at the River

Astoria string ensemble Con Amici presents three energetic masterpieces of classical chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 18 at the River Theater, 230 W. Marine Drive.

Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 4” features three solo lines by Jeffrey Reynolds on violin and Shelley Loring and Janet Bowler on flutes, supported by a string quintet with double bass.

Ralph Vaughan Williams was steeped in the sound of English folk melodies and hymns when he wrote “Phantasy Quintet” in 1912. He gave a leading role to one of the two violas in this piece.

Brahms’ “Sextet for Strings in G Major” is full of lyricism, drive, dreaminess and even moments of torment – outpourings from a fiery 32-year-old composer. Brahms called for two cellos in this piece, but Con Amici members say they’re confident that if he had heard Eric Johnson play one of the parts on his double bass, he would have written it that way.

Con Amici is a six member string ensemble founded three years ago in Astoria to play classical chamber music. Musicians are Jeffrey Reynolds on violin, Eric Johnson on double bass, Monica Belzer on violin, Betsey Ellerbroek on viola, Mike Woods on cello and David Lee Myers on violin and viola.

Tickets to Friday’s concert are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Bill’s Tavern & Brewhouse beer, wine and snacks will be available.
