Portland artist makes a mark with tile workshop

LONG BEACH, Wash. – There will be a handmade clay tile workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9 and 10, taught by Jan Edwards. During the two-day workshop, participants will create at least 10 original earthenware tiles using a wide variety of techniques to embellish the clay surface with color, line and texture.

Edwards has a background in fine arts and learned pottery making at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Colorado, where she became “artist in residence” and a staff member. She has been a studio potter for 25 years. Now a Portland resident, Edwards teaches at Mount Hood Community College and Multnomah Art Center and leads workshops all across the country. She will teach a two-week clay workshop in Italy in the spring, and her work is collected internationally. Several years ago, she received the Bennet Welch Award for Surface Decoration from the Oregon Potters Association.

Workshop participants will use earthenware clay, slips, commercial underglazes and colors and spend time painting, drawing, scratching, carving and stamping to make individual, unique tiles. The class will also experiment with resists, inlays, brushwork and scraffito. No prior clay experience is required.

The workshop will be at the Northwest Visual Art Center. The class fee of $175 will cover all instruction, materials and firing. A materials deposit of $50 is due by Monday, Jan. 25. Call Jan Richardson at (360) 665-3433 or (443) 994-3204 or e-mail info@windymeadowspottery.com to sign up for the class or for additional information.
