Viva! flamenco, bravo! bossa nova

PACIFIC CITY – José Solano presents a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 11, of three master guitarists playing everything from bossa nova to jazz, classical, flamenco, blues, samba and original compositions. The Tres Guitarras Cabaret features Brazilian guitarist Marco de Carvalho, jazz guitarist Chris Mosley and flamenco guitarist and oud player Nat Hulskamp.

The concert will be set up cabaret style at the Kiawanda Community Center, 34600 Kiwanda Drive. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. In addition, the dance floor will be set up, as these musicians produce some wonderfully danceable music. Tables for groups of eight may be reserved. Call Solano at (503) 965-2204 for details and tickets. Brews from the Pelican Pub will be available.

De Carvalho graduated from the prestigious Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro, where he studied composition and harmony under Luis Eca and Ronaldo Miranda. He has performed widely and is now living and performing in Seattle. His repertoire extends from Villa Lobos to Antonio Carlos Jobim and much more. He also sings bossa nova in, of course, Portuguese.

Hulskamp is a master flamenco guitarist and oud player. He creates with other guitarists and musicians fascinating fusions of jazz, bossa nova, Middle Eastern music and flamenco. He has traveled widely and holds a degree in ethnomusicology. He will also perform on the oud, a Middle Eastern lute-like instrument dating back thousands of years, which is the predecessor of the guitar.

Mosley is a Portland jazz guitarist. Originally from Austin, Texas, he claims early influence by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. Having ?spent two years attending Boston’s Berklee College ?of Music, he has studied with some of the world’s ?top musicians, including Joe Lovano, Mick Goodrick ?and Dave Fiucynski. Portland’s Willamette Week said, “Mosley possesses rapid-fire dexterity and a fluidity that is jazz as jazz gets . . . as bold as it is beautiful.” He performs regularly with his jazz company, the Chris Mosley Quartet.
