ASTORIA — The latest Nature Matters talk, presented by Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, is “Coastal Dynamics and the Columbia River Estuary,” presented by oceanography and geology expert Ed Joyce at 7 p.m. Jan. 23.

The lecture in the Fort George Brewery Lovell Showroom will cover geologic features of the Oregon Coast and the influences of plate tectonics and other shoreline processes.

Attendees can expect to learn about coastal geomorphology and oceanography, such as how oceanographic factors affect beach geometry, sediment transport and the dynamics of waves and beaches.

The presentation will also highlight the significance of beach stabilization efforts in maintaining coastal integrity.

Joyce will give a comprehensive overview of the Columbia River estuary, focusing on interactions between the estuary and the open ocean, as well as the impacts of logging, flood plain removal and the influence of upriver dams.

With a doctorate degree in oceanography and a bachelor’s degree in geology, Joyce’s research interests include nearshore sedimentary processes and paleoclimatic studies. He has 12 years of teaching experience and is also on the board of directors for the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition.

Nature Matters, a collaboration with Fort George Brewery and the North Coast Watershed Association, continues on the fourth Thursday of each month from October through May. Doors open at 6 p.m. for this free event.
