ROCKAWAY BEACH – You won’t be singing “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” at the second annual Rockaway Beach Elvis Concert and Fire Festival Saturday, June 26, at the Rockaway Beach Wayside. But Elvis impersonator Rod Shaver may sing it for you.
Shaver, who hails from Portland and says he grew up on Elvis’ music because his mom was a “big fan,” will again headline the event to raise money for the Rockaway Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Shaver will appear in a show featuring a host of other singers, including Cher impersonator Heather Strutnik of Portland, and locals Anne, Bill and Greg Swain, Lynda Bennet, Bruce Kelly, Maggie Patrick, Roland Kipling, Rose Lewis, Will Cooley, Karen Fanning, Denise Percell, Alena Ferguson-Sheldon and Mike Brown.
Doors open for the Saturday night concert at 5 p.m. and the singers start performing at 5:30. Shaver takes the stage at 8 p.m.
The evening’s attractions also include dinner, a raffle and silent auction. Food will be provided by the Pacific House Restaurant in Tillamook, the Old Oregon Smokehouse of Rockaway Beach and the Rockaway Beach Lions Club.
Tickets are $10 per person in advance or $12 each at the door.
The evening concert punctuates a full weekend of events benefiting the firefighters. An arts and crafts fair will be held at the Wayside from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
There will also be a benefit pancake breakfast for the fire department from 8 a.m. until noon Sunday, sponsored by the Lions Club. Fire and emergency volunteers will serve up pancakes, sausages, eggs, juice, coffee and milk. Tickets for breakfast are $6 per person in advance or $7 at the door, and children 6 and younger eat for free.
Advance tickets for the dinner concert and the breakfast can be purchased at the Garibaldi Pub and Eatery in Garibaldi, the U.S. Bank branch in Rockaway Beach and Pacific Moon Tanning and Fitness in the Seaquest Mall, 111 S. Miller St. in Rockaway Beach.
Event sponsors include Weyerhaeuser Hardwoods in Garibaldi and the Rockaway Beach Market in Rockaway Beach.
All proceeds from the festival will be used to purchase medical equipment and needed supplies for the local emergency center and to pay for additional training of volunteers.
