ASTORIA – Pier Pressure Productions (PPP) offers three events the second weekend in February. As a participant in Astoria’s Second Saturday Art Walk, the gallery will host an original art exhibit, and there will be a theater offering during the weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and another for Valentine’s Day (Monday).

During the art walk, the gallery will show “Seek Within,” by Charlotte Bruhn, of Warrenton, from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12.
“Seek Within” is a collection of 21 mirror/mosaic and mixed media pieces that encourage the viewer to identify with archetypes, myth and religious tradition while simultaneously seeing one’s own image.
Each mirror contains messages both literal and figurative, as represented by “The Fool,” “The Moon,” “Death,” or any of the other major arcana cards of the Tarot. Each card is a step in a journey – the journey of spiritual development and karmic destiny.

Bruhn works primarily with clay, specifically tiles of her own making, for mosaic. Recently, she has incorporated found objects and collected ephemera into her mosaics, employing a resin binding rather than grout. The result is a piece with an added depth and multileveled clarity, a play on negative (formerly grouted) space.
The romantic comedy “Almost, Maine” will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13. Because Saturday’s show is on the same day as the Art Walk, PPP will end its segment of the art walk one hour early in order to seat play-goers.
In Almost, Maine, at nine o’clock on a Friday night, the Northern Lights hover over the residents of this place that is almost a town. The lights, the stars and the November snow create a backdrop for the friends who find themselves falling in and out of love in amusing and curious ways.
“Almost, Maine” played for large, delighted audiences a year ago at the Coaster Theatre in Cannon Beach. PPP director Susi Brown brings nearly the same cast back, but rather than having the six actors play all the town’s characters, she has one actor per part, allowing for many other favorite players to walk PPP’s boards.
The cast includes Walt Plummer, Rhonda and Mick Alderman, Toni Ihander, Bill and Lori Wilson Honl, Brandy and Jason Hussa, Ben Van Osdol, Dave Gager, Carly and T.J. Lackner, Melissa Raines, Elizabeth Daniels, Nancy Montgomery, Bill Ham, Sky Gager, and Brad and Alicia Dedmon Bolchunos, who will come in from Portland for the occasion. Crew includes Bobbi Brice, Dan Reiley and Larry Bryant.
Tickets are $15, at the door only, available two hours before curtain. Concessions by Jessica Creager will be available.
The theater takes on a lovely glow at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, for a one-night-only Valentine performance, featuring Edward James and Diane Borcyckowski in A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize winning play “Love Letters.”
This is the story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position. As childhood friends, their lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. The characters sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards – in which, over nearly 50 years, they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats – that have passed between them throughout their separated lives.
Seats for the one-night-only performance will go on sale two hours before curtain. Tickets are $15, and include Valentine sweets and coffee.
