ASTORIA — The 234th Army Band of the National Guard, nicknamed “Oregon’s Own,” is performing a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday on the Liberty Theatre stage.

The Clackamas-based band, which tours in the summer as part of its annual training, consists of four major ensembles — the rock-pop band 45 Away, country-bluegrass band Foxhole, brass quintet Cascade Brass and street band No Brass No Ammo — as well as a full concert band.

Organized in 1919, the band saw duty during World War II and was awarded several citations, including the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, for service between 1944 and 1945.

It was reorganized in 1947 and continues with a group of 40 soldiers from across Oregon and southwest Washington, under the command of Chief Warrant Officer 4 Ashley Alexander.

The band will perform a variety of family-friendly music at the Liberty show, from classical to contemporary, intermixed with patriotic songs and traditional marches. Concessions will be available. Doors open at 2 p.m.

All performances of the 234th Army Band are free. To reserve tickets, visit www.234armyband.com.
