ASTORIA — Four musicians with a shared love of ’90s grunge are banding together for a tribute to Stone Temple Pilots at Astoria’s Labor Temple Diner & Bar at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
“Everyone in the band really loves ’90s rock,” Jeff Green, the group’s drummer, said. “We’re really passionate about it.”
The band’s name, Pretty Penny, comes from a song off Stone Temple Pilots’ album “Purple” from 1994.
Other songs by the band, like “Crackerman” and “Plush,” are part of the Labor Temple setlist, and Green said they might add an Alice in Chains tune or two to their lineup.
Green noticed Roussos’ vocal talent from past performances covering songs by Alice in Chains. “(Roussos) sounds a lot like Scott Weiland, the lead man of Stone Temple Pilots, so we thought to get a Stone Temple Pilots group together,” Green said.
The band is an homage to Weiland, who died in 2015, and they hope to honor the role he played in shaping ’90s rock.
Jarrod Karnofski, bassist, and Chris Mijares, guitarist, are Pretty Penny’s other two members. Two members of the group hail from the North Coast, while two others live in the Portland area. They meet for practice at a studio space in Seaside.
Both Roussos and Green have a deep appreciation for rock music. Roussos has been doing vocals since he was a young adult, and Green started playing the drums when he was 7 years old.
Pretty Penny has played a few shows in western Washington, including at Ilwaco Cider Co. on the Long Beach Peninsula. They hope to play more local shows.
“It would be really nice to make this a full-blown thing,” Roussos said.
The Labor Temple show is 21 and over only. There is a $10 cover charge.
