LONG BEACH, Wash. — It is billed as “The World’s Longest Garage Sale” and who is to argue? The 22-mile stretch of the Long Beach Peninsula comes alive Memorial Day weekend with its largest unorganized event of the year.

In years past, tourism promoters have asked potential vendors to sign up their locations ahead of time and even produced a map. No such sophistication exists in modern times because so many people take part.

Just drive — and look for the signs. Sales are held in backyards from Chinook all the way north to the tip of Surfside and Ocean Park. They begin as soon as it is light each day. If it rains, those who can move their treasures into spacious garages or outbuildings have an advantage.

Some sales begin Friday and continue through the weekend until most of the good stuff is sold. Most begin Saturday, continue Sunday and possibly Monday if anything is unsold.

Some vendors price every item with colored stickers, others simply ask for offers and love to haggle.

Bring plastic shopping bags and plenty of dollar bills. Other tips: give the kids a handful of quarters, leave the dogs at home, wear sturdy shoes because of uneven driveways and bring a cooler of bottled water. And, please, park responsibly.
