Gearhart hosts colorful First Saturday Artwalk

GEARHART — The Gearhart Art Walk will take place 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. May 3.

The event is always on the first Saturday afternoon of every month. Artists’ studios, galleries and shops host opening shows launching month-long curated visual art exhibitions.

Gearhart’s art scene is rare because most of the galleries participating in the art walk are also the artists’ studios. It is an opportunity for guests to view the artwork and meet the artists.

Featured are Cheri Walter, acrylic artist, and Karl Hauer, watercolorist. Co-owner Walter’s paintings use color and archetypes to express feelings with acrylic on canvas.

The gallery will open a new show in May featuring works created by five member artists with acrylic paints. There will be a reception for the artists during the Art Walk. The show will be open 11a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays to Sundays from May 2 to June 1.

Anne Cullivan began her art style exploration about five years ago with watercolors and moved to fluid acrylic paints a few years later. The ocean and beach have been a major source of inspiration for many of her designs, which includes painting on a variety of surfaces.

Tj Lev began painting later in life after she became overwhelmed with an urge to paint. Typically using acrylics; her art is whimsical, colorful and fun. With no formal art training, she paints by instinct. For her, color creates energy, conveying happiness and joy. Color is magical. She is often inspired by something small — a shadow or a reflection–all spiced up by her lively imagination and wacky sense of humor.

Mary Schlunegger has had a lifelong passion for all art forms. She paints primarily with acrylics, but loves to experiment with color and texture in mixed media and fiber art, mixing techniques with unexpected materials using art skills learned throughout her life.

Sherise Smith is passionate about all art and works in acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. She will be showing pieces from her “Croatian Love” series, inspired by her time spent in Croatia last summer, along with some of her other work.

Phyllis Taylor, a retired graphic designer/illustrator, loves acrylics. Although they dry very quickly, she works with one color at a time in a small area while the paint is still wet. It’s the reverse of watercolor in terms of building color on the canvas and considers it a fun challenge.

The entry gallery has prints, small objects, artworks and notecards, small affordable gifts, and more. The gallery, which plans events to celebrate its 75th year, is features online at www.trailsendart.org. Call (503) 717-9458 or email trailsendartassociation@gmail.com for details.
