- Lutenist and guitarist Hideki Yamaya is the artistic director of Portland-based early music ensemble Musica Maestrale.
ASTORIA — Musica Maestrale, a Portland-based period performance chamber ensemble, will present “Airs de Cour: 17th Century Court Music of France” 7 p.m. Jan. 8 in the sanctuary at Grace Episcopal Church.
The program will feature music from the court of French kings Louis XIII and XIV. Primarily meant for private listening, these songs show a tender, intimate side of Baroque music, expressing sentiments of loss, longing and heartbreak.
Hideki Yamaya, founding artistic director of Musica Maestrale, will be featured on Renaissance lute and theorbo. Joining Yamaya will be Barbara Allen Hill and Daniel Meyers, early music performers from Boston.
A Q&A session will follow the concert with explanations of the music, composers and instruments. Admission is pay-what-you-will at the door; premium tickets are $20 or $10 for students.
