On New Year’s Day, state parks across Oregon and Washington will offer guided First Day Hikes to ring in 2025.
In Oregon, a total of 37 hikes are being offered at 30 parks statewide, including a trek along the Jetty Trail at the Fort Stevens Historic Area and a journey through the interior trails of Oswald West State Park.
Both trips will begin at 9 a.m. At Fort Stevens, hikers will meet at the park’s visitor center before exploring historic features from the Civil War through World War II.
The trail will follow mostly flat ground with some slight elevation changes. Leashed dogs are welcome.
At Oswald West, hikers will meet at the main parking lot off U.S. Highway 101 by the Short Sand Beach trailhead, joining two park rangers who will lead the group and share insights on the park’s history and natural splendor.
Across the Columbia River at Cape Disappointment State Park, this year’s First Day Hike, titled “Ebb and Flow: Life Cycle of the Pacific Ocean,” will begin at 10 a.m. from the Seaview Beach Approach, continuing along the ocean shore.
On this hike, guides will talk about how Pacific Ocean tides and currents have shaped the landscape of the Long Beach Peninsula. The trek will be about 1.5 miles round-trip and is suggested for children over 6 years old.
Hikers on all routes are encouraged to dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes and bring water, plus a camera or binoculars if desired for viewing coastal wildlife. Registration is not required to participate.
