On New Year’s Eve, a group of regional musicians will band together at the Liberty Theatre for a tribute show in honor of 2024’s “Fallen Heroes,” iconic musicians who have died over the past year.

The show, an annual tradition at the theater’s McTavish Room, kicks off at 10 p.m. and continues until midnight.

“It’s a good way for us to get outside of our typical genres,” said Brian Bovenizer, the show’s organizer. “A lot of us play folk and country usually and this gives us a chance to have some fun with it and do things we wouldn’t usually do.”

Bovenizer, who is also a marketing director at Fort George Brewery and co-founder of The Rope Room, a music studio in Astoria, will be one of 11 singers onstage.

Over the years, “Fallen Heroes” has become a well-loved community event for local musicians to stretch their talents.

Kris Kristofferson, Liam Payne, Phil Lesh and Mary Weiss are just a few of the musicians the show will pay homage to. Guests can expect to hear from members of area bands Blind Pilot, Horse Feathers, The New Old Stock and Idanha.

“We rehearse for a few days before, and time it to have a song at (New Year’s Eve) that is apt for the celebration,” Bovenizer said.

Even though the structure is the same each year, Bovenizer said each setlist is unique and reflects the variety of talent lost in the past year. Each show brings new styles and songs to master.

“It’s a heavy learning curve every single year,” he said.

Bovenizer is particularly looking forward to playing Kristofferson’s 1972 song “Jesus was a Capricorn (Owed to John Pine).” Kristofferson, an actor and country music icon, died at age 88 in September.

“It’s always been a near and dear song to me,” he said.

J.D. Souther, who passed away last September, will be honored via a cover of “Heartache Tonight” by The Eagles.

“That feels like an appropriate New Year’s Eve song,” Bovenizer laughed.

Fallen Heroes is coming up on its 10th year. Since then, it’s grown, with new faces joining the group of performers. Appearances in years past have included Colin Meloy, frontman of the Portland-based indie rock band the Decemberists.

“Hosting it at the McTavish Room has allowed us to take it to the next level,” he said.

Admission is free for the show, and doors open at 9:30 p.m. It’s standing room only and open to all ages.

Also, for those who can’t make the New Year’s Eve show at the Liberty or just want to keep the party going, the group will be playing at 2 p.m. New Year’s Day at Fort George.
