The Brownsmead Flats perform at the Crab, Seafood & Wine Festival in Astoria.

RAYMOND, Wash. — The Raymond Theatre will host local “crabgrass” band Brownsmead Flats for a free concert as part of its Sunday Afternoon Live music series at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The band, which takes its name from the town of Brownsmead, has been playing together for over 40 years. Their longtime camaraderie and sense of fun draw in their audiences, sometimes with sing-alongs and group dances.

They describe their music as “crabgrass,” a mix of bluegrass with the flavor of sea shanties and fishing lore. Backed by mandolin, guitar, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, banjo, harmonica and bass, they channel bluegrass mastery into songs about rainfall, dangerous river crossings, Lewis and Clark and other coastal themes.

Recent performances have included Astoria’s FisherPoets Gathering and Crab, Seafood & Wine Festival and Cannon Beach’s Stormy Weather Arts Festival.

This is a free concert. Donations will be gratefully accepted. For more details about the 21st season of Sunday Afternoon Live, visit www.sundayafternoonlive.org.
