‘Enchanted evening’ celebrates the winter solstice in Seaview

An experimental video called “Age of Icons: Hyperbody Screentest” created by Marcus Estes will be shown at the event.

Cutting-edge art will be on tap at the Sou’wester Lodge in Seaview on Saturday to celebrate the winter solstice. But the star may well be a cat called Meatball.

The popular feline will team up with Meghan Gambill for a limited-edition release of prints and postcards at 7 p.m. “He is beloved by guests,” said Liz Talley, arts administrator for Sou’wester Arts, the nonprofit arm of the lodge. “He is almost a ‘saintly’ figure that looks over the Sou’wester. It’s kind of a ‘crowd-pleaser.’”

The session is one phase of an evening of art and performance which will launch the Sou’wester’s strategy of quarterly events. More are planned in 2025, including Arts Week in March and a commemoration of the summer solstice.

The Sou’wester is at 3728 J Place in Seaview, south of downtown Long Beach. The organization also has a storefront called Ilwaco Artworks at 109 First Ave. in Ilwaco. It features a clay studio and gallery devoted to ceramics and other works.

The Artworks location will host a 6 p.m. talk titled “What If” by Dawn Stetzel, an artist who creates mixed-media sculptural contraptions from recycled materials.

The action switches to Seaview at 7 p.m. with an opening reception and simultaneous art displays. “The idea is people wander into the different spaces,” Talley said.

If the weather cooperates, there may be a bonfire in the main courtyard. Talley bills it as “an enchanting evening of exhibitions and performances.”

Artists Rowan Walton and Gracen Bookmyer from Olympia, Washington, will offer an unusual take on family and relationships with puppets in an exhibit called, “We’ve Been There.”

At the same time, Marcus Estes, curator at Avalon in Astoria, will showcase an experimental video called “Age of Icons: Hyperbody Screentest.”

Later in the evening, there will be poetry and music. Anis Mojgani of Portland, who has just stepped down after five years as Oregon’s poet laureate, will perform at 8 p.m. “He is a dear friend of the Sou’wester and we are super-lucky to have him,” Talley said.

At 8:30 p.m., there will be an improvisational musical performance by Ted Laderas, who performs under the name of “The Oo-Ray.” He describes himself as “an experimental cellist.” The evening concludes at 10 p.m.

“We are so excited, and we are all getting ready,” said Talley, who has a background as an illustrator. “We know it is a busy time of year, but we hope it brings some fresh energy.”

Art displays will continue after the solstice.
