ASTORIA — A Thanksgiving Eve Pre-Funk celebration at Fort George Brewery will pair the release of a holiday barleywine with live music from Portland soul legends Ural Thomas & The Pain.
The music starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday along with sips of One Big Holiday, a spiced barleywine with chestnuts.
Through more than 60 years, Thomas has shared the stage with James Brown and Etta James, Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder.
By the end of the 1960s, disillusioned with the industry and missing the communal aspect of making music, he returned to his hometown of Portland to establish a Sunday night jam session that continued for decades.
In 2014, Portland DJ and drummer Scott McGee sat in on that jam. The two became friends and within months Magee had assembled a full show band that they christened Ural Thomas and The Pain.
Their third and latest release is “Dancing Dimensions,” an album that explores everything from sweet Chicago soul to airy West Coast psychedelia to Sly funk, retaining a distinctive sound refined by the band over the years.
The Fort George event is free and open to all ages. For details, visit www.fortgeorgebrewery.com.
