ASTORIA — A musical edition of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” will be brought to life by a cast and crew of nearly 30 students at Astoria High School over two weekends.
The play opens at 6:30 p.m. Friday with additional evening performances Nov. 14 and Nov. 15. There will also be two matinees at 2 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 16.
Playing the title role of Matilda is Isabel O’Connor. Other cast members include Zander Berner, Anne Bigda, Bayle Giliga, River Harer and Lillian Smith.
Directing the play is Katherine Lacaze, who is excited to share students’ performances with the community.
“I think this is one of the most fun and lighthearted shows we’ve produced in a while. The music and script are cleverly written, and our cast is the perfect fit to translate them into a live performance,” Lacaze said.
The play includes high-energy dance numbers with titles like “Miracle,” “Naughty” and “Revolting Children.”
The story revolves around Matilda, a girl with the imagination to dream about a better life, but first must rally her classmates to stand up to their tyrannical headmistress, Agatha Trunchbull, with the love and support of her compassionate teacher, Miss Honey.
Based on a book by Dennis Kelly with original songs by Tim Minchin, performances of “Matilda: The Musical” have won 47 international awards, entertaining audiences with a story that revels in the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination.
General admission tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids and students. They can be purchased at the door or online at www.msbtickets.com/AstoriaHighSchool/schoolevents.
