Maritime museum course surveys coastal geology

ASTORIA — A three-week course led by earth scientist Ed Joyce through the Columbia River Maritime Museum will teach students about geology and oceanography of the Columbia River and Oregon Coast.
In the first of three 6 p.m. Tuesday sessions at the Barbey Maritime Center, Joyce will introduce plate tectonics and major earthquakes that have impacted the coast.
In the second week of the course, students can expect to learn about beach geometry, sediment transport, stabilization efforts and offshore wind technology.
The last week will cover the Columbia River estuary, its interactions with the open ocean and the impacts of floodplain removal and upriver dams.
Joyce holds a doctorate degree in oceanography and a bachelor’s degree in geology. His research interests include nearshore sedimentary processes and paleoclimatic studies. He has 12 years of college teaching experience and is on the board of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition.
