A Liberty Theatre show where audiences decide the music

The 45th parallel is moving farther north this weekend.

The point halfway between Earth’s equator and the North Pole lands on the Oregon Coast just north of Lincoln City, where one of about a half-dozen signposts placed throughout the state marks its location.

It also lends its name to a Portland-based nonprofit music group that includes the 45th Parallel Chamber Orchestra, of which the Arcturus Winds ensemble is a part.

On Saturday at the Liberty Theatre McTavish Room, the ensemble will offer a tasting menu of classical compositions to go with a catered dinner.

Guests will receive a number and a long list of short solo and orchestra numbers.

“There’s something on the program you’ll definitely recognize, and then there’s something on the program that you’re like, ‘I have no idea,’” said Lisa Lipton, executive director of 45th Parallel Universe.

At the show, orchestra members will draw numbers out of a hat and guests with selected numbers will decide what is played next off the tasting menu.

“It’s a fun and engaging experiment,” Lipton said. “People really like it, because they get the agency and it gives (them) an opportunity to discover some things and expand on what (they) like, like at a winery. Everyone wins.”

The concert is part of the historic venue’s ongoing drive to remove elitism around classical music while delivering high production and play quality, according to Jennifer Crockett, executive director of the Liberty Theatre.

All the musicians in the wind ensemble play with the Portland-based Oregon Symphony.

“These 45th Parallel shows are a really good way to satisfy our existing classical music audience while also making it more accessible to people that may not usually come to these types of shows,” said Crockett, who has also played clarinet with the orchestra.

“Some people really love classics and then some people are more excited by modern music, and so they do a little bit of everything and it’s all very short and manageable.”

Saturday’s concert will be 45th Parallel’s second at the Liberty.

The bite-sized music comes with a meal. Bridgewater Bistro will be catering a dinner out of Liberty’s new kitchen, with various dietary preferences available.

Menu offerings include a spinach salad with crumbled goat cheese; salmon with a lemon tarragon beurre blanc; tuscan chicken featuring a house-made cream sauce, spinach and sundried tomatoes; and sides like cauliflower mashed potatoes or green beans with herbs de provence.

“There’s more going on than just sitting in your chair,” Crockett said about the event. “You’re free to enjoy it in whatever way you want: clap whenever you want. You can say, ‘wow,’ you can boo if you want to.”

45th Parallel is amidst an effort to expand to the coast and elsewhere around the state, according to Lipton. “We’re Oregon-based,” she said. “The group has been at a growing point, and now it’s ready to continue to grow. We’d like to do runouts at the coast.”

Tickets are available at Liberty’s website or box office. The string contingent of the 45th Parallel Orchestra is also planning to do a tasting menu show at the Liberty in the fall.

“Everyone should really support the Liberty because they’re doing a lot of cool and breaking-the-mold stuff,” Lipton said. “It’s also a stunningly beautiful theater.”
