- “In The Shadow Of The Holy Mountain,” the first album in eight years from Blind Pilot, releases Friday.
After years of writer’s block, Israel Nebeker wrote Blind Pilot’s latest album, “In The Shadow of The Holy Mountain,” in one month.
To reconnect with his voice as a songwriter, Nebeker, the indie folk band’s frontman who is from the North Coast, traveled to Scandinavia to explore his family’s roots, where experiences in a drum circle and on a mountain proved inspirational.
Soon after, he returned to Astoria to reunite with bandmates Ryan Dobrowski, Luke Ydstie and Kati Claborn.
That led to the band’s first album in eight years.
Its three singles, “Just a Bird,” “Jacaranda” and “Brave,” are accompanied by art from drummer Dobrowski, who also created paintings for its front and back covers.
The album releases on Friday from ATO Records.
Dobrowski and Nebeker formed an early version of Blind Pilot in the mid-2000s. The band’s last album, “And Then Like Lions,” was released in 2016 — it dealt with ideas of loss after the death of Nebeker’s father, Royal Nebeker, a renowned local artist and teacher.
The band’s other albums are 2008’s “3 Rounds and a Sound” and 2011’s “We Are The Tide.”
Tickets are on sale for their ongoing tour, which includes two appearances at Astoria’s Liberty Theatre on Nov. 29 and Nov. 30.
