ASTORIA — Ameriikan Poijat, a traditional Finnish brass septet, is playing a series of free concerts in Astoria and Naselle, Washington, between Thursday and Sunday.
The band, whose name translates as “Boys of America,” specializes in social dance music: waltzes, schottisches, polkas, mazurkas and other dances found among manuscript sources from Finnish bands and archives.
In a series of concerts supported by a grant from Finlandia Foundation National, the group will play in Astoria at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Flavel House Museum gardens; 7 p.m. Friday at Peace First Lutheran Church; and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park.
On the Washington state side of the Columbia River, the band plays 11 a.m. Saturday at the Long Beach Pavilion in Naselle and 4 p.m. Saturday at Naselle High School.
For more than 30 years, Ameriikan Poijat has toured and played at folk festivals throughout the United States and Canada, and has also played in five tours of Finland.
Their recordings can be found in six albums, the most recent being 2021’s “Joulusauna: Finnish Christmas Music for Brass Septet.” The band also publishes sheet music to make their repertoire accessible to other community music groups.
