John Stowell and Dmitri Matheny perform as Beleza! 7:30 p.m. Friday at KALA.

ASTORIA — Guitarist John Stowell and flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny are performing as Beleza! in a 7:30 p.m. Friday show at KALA.

The duo share a passion for bossa nova, samba and the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim. They chose the name Beleza! from the Portuguese word for “beauty.”

Stowell tours, records and teaches internationally, and has served as an assistant director and performer in Oregon Public Broadcasting’s PDX Jazz Summit. Together with bassist David Friesen, he has been featured on the soundtracks of two Academy Award-nominated short films.

Matheny is the winner of Golden Ear’s NW Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year award. A Berklee College of Music graduate, he has toured extensively since the 1990s and has over 100 recordings to his credit.
