Make Music Day encourages bands to play free public concerts. The Arts Council of Clatsop County is taking part in the event for the third year.

ASTORIA — The Arts Council of Clatsop County is joining in a worldwide celebration of music on Friday.

More than a dozen performers have signed up to take part by playing free concerts across town, from maritime tunes by Eli Schenk at the Barbey Maritime Center to the Tenor Guitar Orchestra singers at the Ten Fifteen Theater and on Pier 39.

Others include the Peninsula Guitar Trio, Clatsop County Celts, Mattison Solgan, Those Pale Stars and Not Your Usual Handbell Choir.

The occasion is Make Music Day, a one-day event that invites musicians to stage free outdoor performances on the day of the summer solstice.

Make Music Day started in Paris, France, in 1982 as Fête de la Musique, and now reaches more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries.

Registration is still open for musicians and venues. For a full list of events and details on how to take part, visit www.makemusicday.org/clatsopcounty.
