June art in Gearhart: A pastel group show, elk paintings

On the first Saturday of each month, stop by participating locations in Gearhart from 2 to 5 p.m. to see new exhibits, enjoy refreshments and meet local artists.

A Great Gallery, 576 Pacific Way

Celebrating the Roosevelt elk as a part of the North Coast community. Bulls can weigh anywhere from 800 to 1,200 pounds, with the largest antlers of all the elk species. This gallery will have framed prints to honor the majestic creatures. Refreshments will be served during the event.

Gearhart Artful Home, 3350 U.S. Highway 101

This location will present woodworking items from Chuck Fitz, a Warrenton artist who crafts from salvaged materials.

Also on display will be trays, tables and other items made of wood and resin by Cindy Bricca, of Gearhart, and wall plaques, cribbage boards and cutting boards by Tom Rooney, of Salem. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

The Station, 3427 U.S. Highway 101

Come in and see artist David Savinar in the studio during the event. His newest works depict people and beach scenes. He works in oils and watercolor and will work on commission.

Trail’s End Art Association, 656 A St.

Opening a new show with works from an intermediate and advanced pastel group. There will be a reception for the artists during the event. The show will be open during regular gallery hours on weekends through June 30.

The pastel group explores and shares new techniques most weeks. Group members in this show include Lynda Campbell, MaryAnn Gantenbein, Kathy Moberg, Linda Wyss, Deanne Johnson, Linda Rook and Linda Schaefer.

Campbell pursued pastels after a career as an art educator. Participating in this group for over 16 years, she brings a painterly style to natural objects. She enjoys bold color and all genres from landscapes to still life.

Gantenbein explores multiple media and is quick to use pastels to express beauty where she sees it. She became a committed artist upon retirement. Johnson is a specialist in pastel pet portraiture. A lover of animals, she began working on commissioned pet portraits about 10 years ago.

Moberg was instrumental in getting the pastel group started, having created works in pastels and watercolor for over 40 years. Rook has worked in all dry media, pastels give her another way to express the beauty she sees around her. Wyss creates works in both pastels and watercolors.
