Folk group to play songs about local history in Clatskanie

CLATSKANIE — Wahkiakum County folk band Skamokawa Swamp Opera will play songs by and about the people of the lower Columbia at a 3 p.m. Sunday show at the Birkenfeld Theatre.

Members of the band are Andrew Emlen, a composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist; Kyleen Austin, a guitarist and composer with an opera background; Erik Friend, a percussionist, tenor and mandolin player; and Jillian Raye, a banjo player and singer.

They will bring original music as well as arrangements of songs by other locals to the stage. In the past, their lineup has included operatic arias, Motown hip-hop, 19th-century Voyageur songs and local history compositions by local singer-songwriter Mary Garvey.
