Duo to play Brazilian choro music

LONG BEACH, Wash. — Rio Con Brio, the duo of mandolinist Tim Connell and guitarist Mike Burdette, will play pieces of choro music, a genre from Brazil in the early 20th century, at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Peninsula Arts Center.

Choro music takes inspiration from Afro-Brazilian rhythms and European cafe music. Connell and Burdette have been performing a choro repertoire for more than 15 years.

Connell, a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, has been performing as a mandolinist for more than 20 years. He tours regularly with The Ger Mandolin Orchestra and has performed with many accomplished mandolinists and choro musicians.

Burdette, who lives in Newberg, performs Brazilian choro and jazz guitar music. He also builds and repairs instruments at Portland Fretworks.
