Iris Sullivan Daire holds up a textile piece made with indigo dye, sourced from the leaves of plants. Indigo is this year’s theme for the Hoffman Center’s annual community show.

MANZANITA — Through the month of January, the Hoffman Center for the Arts will celebrate the color indigo, beginning with the center’s annual community show, opening with an artist reception from 1 to 4 p.m. at the gallery.

The community show, now in its eighth year, compiles works from artists within Clatsop and Tillamook counties. Media will range from paintings and prints to textiles, wood, ceramics and written work.

No more than one piece per artist can be entered for the show, and all art must somehow include the color indigo.

The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 27 during regular gallery hours. In the meantime, a Jan. 14 lecture by artist Iris Sullivan Daire will review the long history of plant-based indigo dye’s use in textiles.

The theme continues at 3 p.m. Jan. 20, when an open mic event invites locals to interpret the color through song, poetry and reading. Each presentation will be limited to five minutes.
