Salty Raven finds a second home in Cannon Beach

Salty Raven Cannon Beach is located on Hemlock Street.

Artist Seasons Kaz Sparks grew up visiting Cannon Beach, so the decision on a location to expand her store, Salty Raven, was simple.

Cannon Beach was “the first place I bought art from local artists,” Sparks recalled.

Salty Raven, which has a flagship location in Tillamook, opened a second location on Hemlock Street last year. Since then, the shop has featured a growing collection of Sparks’ drawings and outlines, inspired by coastal landscapes and marine life.

In a nod to Cannon Beach, one of her designs featured Haystack Rock, with tufted puffins throughout the shoreline of the drawing.

That scene is printed on glassware, clothing, vinyl stickers and other items at the Cannon Beach store. Other drawings there depict local landmarks like the Astoria Bridge and the beach in Manzanita.

“We’ve added some designs,” Sparks said, adding that the collection has “expanded with the more northern location.”

The shop has also joined in with local events. During the Stormy Weather Arts Festival in November, Sparks created live paintings inspired by the jellyfish that often wash up on the shores of Cannon Beach.

“Everything I make is there on display,” she said.

With a growing collection, more designs and new clothing pieces, Sparks has struck a balance between functionality and art.

Colorful glassware is a big part of Salty Raven’s merchandise. Sparks’ keeps her stores fully stocked with pieces so that people can hand-pick, mix and match sets.

Both of Sparks’ stores pull from coastal themes, but she said the Cannon Beach location has a warmer feel and a bit of a different design in its layout.

“In the new store, we inherited a beautiful wood floor, and quite a bit lower ceilings so it’s a cozier vibe from that,” Sparks said.

She printed large photographs she had taken of sea anemones and starfish-lined tide pools and turned them into large area rugs for the shop.

The Cannon Beach store also features a dressing room lined with bright tiles and gold hardware Sparks said has become iconic in and of itself.

“People go in and just take selfies,” she laughed.

The store’s latest event is an upcoming holiday party. Santa will visit Salty Raven Cannon Beach from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m Saturday with an opportunity for kids to get photos, adults to toast with champagne, gift baskets and a look at Sparks’ latest designs.

Looking to the future, Sparks hopes to open a third location, possibly in Astoria, but nothing is set in stone yet. For now, she and her team enjoy meeting new people who stop by the shops and seeing familiar faces who sift through new artwork.
