Water Music Society closes season with holiday jazz

Greta Matassa, a Seattle jazz singer, performs at this year’s Water Music Society’s holiday show.

The Water Music Society concludes its 2023 season on the Long Beach Peninsula with a holiday concert on Sunday at the Chinook School Event Center.

The event starts at 2 p.m. with a social hour featuring a no-host wine and champagne bar. The two-hour show begins at 3 p.m.

Diane Marshall, one of the organizers, is excited. “The perfect way to kick off the holiday season — get out your beautiful red sweaters or ugly Christmas sweatshirts, come feast on holiday sweet treats, as well as some savory offerings, complemented with a glass of bubbly, complete with a raspberry,” she said.

Performing are George Mitchell and friends. These include Greta Matassa, who has been voted Northwest Vocalist of the Year by Earshot Jazz seven times in 15 years. Marshall described her as “down-to-earth, immensely talented.”

Mitchell, a pianist and singer, was the touring piano player for Diana Ross. His band features Clipper Anderson on bass, Charlie Doggett on drums and Renato Caranto playing saxophone.

The Water Music Society’s concerts raise funds to support art and music programs in the Naselle and Ocean Beach school districts.

Members of the Ilwaco High School Jazz Band will perform songs from the season during the social hour. Music students will assist with accessible parking, set-up, clean-up and the serving of appetizers and desserts.

The afternoon will include a drawing for free tickets to attend next year’s corresponding event.

“It is the perfect way to spend the first Sunday afternoon in December,” said Marshall. “Many people have just put up their own decor, and now they can come and relax, and smile and sip and feast, and get their holiday mojo in high gear.”
