Stamps to preserve lighthouses

Desdemona Sands Lighthouse once sat on pilings near the mouth of the Columbia River.

Earlier this month, I picked up the lighthouse passport from the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Ilwaco, a blue vinyl book issued by the U.S. Lighthouse Society, designed to resemble a U.S. passport.

Commemorative stamps for Cape Disappointment and North Head lighthouses in Washington state filled the book’s first panels, leaving space for 58 more.

Those can be collected from the quiet desks of lighthouse gift shops, from local museums, lightships and U.S. Coast Guard stations at locations across the United States and Canada.

Fourteen are available in Oregon, including three at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria. Stamps there are offered for the historic Point Adams Lighthouse and Lifesaving Station and the Lightship Columbia.

A stamp for Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, which is inaccessible to the public, is available from the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum. Other North Coast stamps are available at Cape Meares Lighthouse and the Historic U.S. Coast Guard Boathouse in Garibaldi.

A limited edition lost light series also included a stamp for the Desdemona Sands Lighthouse, which was removed in 1965.

A small donation is suggested for each stamp, benefiting lighthouse restoration and preservation projects. After filling out a book, collectors can request a completion patch and advance through levels of the passport program.

Even for this frequent lighthouse visitor, that might take a while.
