Manzanita book events focus on Indigenous poetry, healthy aging

- "The Native Who Never Left" is a sequel to author Cliff Taylor’s first book, "The Memory of Souls."
MANZANITA — Three authors will read during two events this week at Hoffman Center for the Arts.

At 4:30 p.m. Friday, Astoria author Cliff Taylor will read from “The Native Who Never Left,” a collection of poems. Taylor is a poet, speaker and storyteller who is a member of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
Authors Marcy Houle and Elizabeth Eckstrom will discuss their book “The Gift of Aging” at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The book explores how bodies and brains change through time, alongside medical, legal and financial advice and stories of wise elders.
Houle, who lives in Sauvie Island, is a wildlife biologist and the author of eight books. She is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and The Globe and Mail.

Eckstrom is chief of geriatrics in the division of general internal medicine and geriatrics at Oregon Health & Science University. Her research focuses on healthy aging.
