The Tiptons Saxophone Quartet will perform Friday at KALA.

ASTORIA — The Tiptons Saxophone Quartet & Drums, celebrating over 30 years as a band, will perform a set at 7:30 p.m. Friday at KALA.

The band consists of Amy Denio on alto saxophone and clarinet, Jessica Lurie on alto/tenor saxophone, Sue Orfield on tenor saxophone, Tina Richerson on baritone saxophone and Xavier Lecouturier on drums and percussion. They take their band name from Billy Tipton, a female-born saxophonist who lived their life as a man in order to become a professional musician.

The group’s performance will span a variety of genres, including big band, gospel, bluegrass, Balkan, chamber jazz and more, using saxophone, clarinet, drums and percussion.
