National and state parks across Oregon and Washington will hold first day hikes on New Year’s Day, many including historical aspects.
Among the local hikes planned are a trek through Fort Stevens State Park, an easy route open to all ages and pets, estimated around 35 to 45 minutes. Elk, eagles and other winter birds are common on the route.
In Washington, a first day hike through the 1/2-mile Coastal Forest Loop Trail at Cape Disappointment State Park will invite explorers to learn about New Year’s Day as celebrated in 1806 during the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Park passes may be required for first day hikes. Check www.parks.wa.gov and www.stateparks.oregon.gov for details.
