Astoria’s Liberty Theatre plays many roles – concert hall, music venue, film showing spot, community gathering place and performance stage. Fresh from hosting the Astoria International Film Festival, in November the historic venue will welcome a variety of events.

The theater’s film run isn’t quite over, at least not before an appearance from “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” actor Mews Small, who will answer audience questions after a showing of the movie at 6 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday, the theater will welcome The Sounds of Soul, six performers who are singers, dancers and songwriters. The Florida-based group, who have performed together since 1996, will dazzle audiences with a selection of Motown hits and other soul favorites, including songs by Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Lionel Richie and The Supremes.

“(The) Sounds of Soul is a joyride of a show” Michael Shipley, Liberty Theatre’s marketing coordinator, said. “It’s a night filled with hits and it’s going to be a great time.”

On Monday, husband-and-wife duo Chris and Suhey Perondi will bring stunt dogs to the Liberty stage. Since 1999, the couple has featured their dogs – rescued from U.S. animal shelters – in thousands of shows.

One of the couple’s main goals through the show is to raise awareness of shelters and to encourage adoption. Both are master dog trainers, a status earned after completing a rigorous course. The couple uses positive reinforcement training to lead the show’s dogs to complete a variety of tricks like dancing and jumping through the air.

The stunt dogs “do backflips, walk on their forelegs, jump over huge barriers, jump rope and more,” Shipley said. “Come ready to have fun.”
