- Imogen Gallery currently features the work of Portland artist and fisherman George Wilson, including this painting titled ‘Rain, Astoria.’
ASTORIA — With the annual FisherPoets Gathering upon us, Imogen Gallery hosts “Tides,” the third solo exhibition by George Wilson, a professional Portland artist and fisherman.
From 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, everyone is invited to a welcoming reception to kick off the full weekend of FisherPoets events. The exhibition will remain on display through Tuesday, March 5.
Year after year, the fishermen who might be poets, or vice versa, convene in Astoria to share their prose, short stories and livelihood with those of us who have perhaps never been to sea, let alone experienced firsthand the hard, dangerous work of commercial fishing.
The same is true of visual artists who make their living from the sea. Wilson is one of those individuals, who from childhood has enjoyed the beauty, sometimes solitude and unpredictability of the fishing industry while combining that with his other love: the visual language he uses to narrate his observations as a fisherman.
Imogen Gallery is at 240 11th St. For more information, call 503-468-0620, visit the gallery in person or online on Facebook or at imogengallery.com.
