Astoria — The Liberty Theater presents “To Have and Have Not,” the second film in the Astoria International Film Festival’s Winter Sunday Series, starring Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan and Lauren Bacall. The film starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1.

The film is set in Fort-de-France, Martinique, in the summer of 1940 shortly after the fall of France and the installation of the Vichy regime during World War II. World-weary fishing-boat captain Harry avoids getting involved in politics, refusing to smuggle French Resistance fighters into Martinique. But when a client is shot before he can pay, Harry agrees to help hotel owner Gerard smuggle two Resistance fighters to the island. Harry is further swayed by Slim, a wandering American girl, and when the police take his friend Eddie hostage, Harry is forced to fight for the Resistance.

“To Have and Have Not” is a 1944 American romance-war-adventure film directed by Howard Hawks. Although the story was significantly altered for the film, it was somewhat based on Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the same name. Cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan, Lauren Bacall, Dolores Moran, Hoagy Carmichael and Sheldon Leonard.

The Liberty Theater is located at 1203 Commercial St. Tickets are $5 for open seating. For information, call 503-325-5922 or visit www.liberty-theater.org.
