ASTORIA — Terrie Remington is the current featured artist at 3 Cups Coffee House.

Her artwork will be on display from Dec. 11 to Jan. 31. All are invited to meet the artist at a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 at the coffee house, located at 279 W. Marine Drive.

Remington was born in Rockville Centre, New York, and studied art at the University of Arizona at Tucson, with artist Frank Milner in San Francisco, the Mendocino Art Center in California, the University of Washington in Seattle, and the Esquela de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain.

Her technique of sculpture paintings is a craft Remington developed during her 11-year residency in Spain and which she first introduced in 1967 at her gallery Refugi d’Art in Barcelona.

The paintings are sculpted on canvas-covered board. The multi-media sculpture is clay, natural fibers and raw linen, marbelized for durability, then painted in acrylics and oils. Remington also sometimes uses sealed driftwood, shells, moss and feathers in her works.

“It is my quest to capture the true essence of a subject. I need to get to the passion of it — the emotional fire — the driving force,” Remington says. “I choose to work with sculpture combined with color. The tactile quality of sculptural paintings provides information of depth and energy; the colors speak in a more ethereal realm. I use whatever media necessary to manifest that elusive quality that connects the emotional and spiritual to the physical art form.”
