Klezmer music is an Eastern European-based genre, and though it’s inherently tied to the Jewish community, it isn’t a religious-based music. The group is led by Jack Falk, clarinetist and singer. Falk, who is also a traditional Jewish cantor, sings primarily in Yiddish, but also sings in Romanian, Hungarian, Hebrew and more.

Falk has performed at The River Theatre and the Netal Grange in years past with his group The Hester St. Troupe. Last year, Falk came to Astoria to participate in the Rash Hashana service as a cantor, the first in more than 50 years. Although this was a huge milestone for the North Coast Jewish Community, Falk had already been involved with the community of Astoria for several years.

Other Hora Tzigane members include: Martin Morgenbesser, accordionist, who leads traditional East European Jewish dance; Andrew Ehrlich, violinist, and concertmaster of the Portland Chamber Orchestra; and Ethan Chessin, trombonist, who founded the University of Washington Klezmer Band as a graduate student.

KALA is located at 1017 Marine Drive. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Cocktails will be available. All ages are welcome.
