SEASIDE – Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District reminds us that in addition to the ongoing aquatics programs, patrons can enjoy activities ranging from fitness and martial arts to dance and art classes.

Children’s swim classes at the pool continue to be important, with periodic rock n swims, water polo classes, regular swim lessons and water fitness. Kids can also take part in After School Adventure for ages 5 to 12, which takes place from school dismissal to 6 p.m. school days, at the Youth Center. Day Off Camp is held from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. on no-school or school in-service days, with swimming and many other structured activities.

Step by Step Preschool is offered to provide very young children with a positive, safe and educational atmosphere that slowly acclimates and prepares the child for elementary school with social and cognitive development through a highly structured art and music-based curriculum. Scholarships are available for this program.

Don’t overlook the free drop-in room at the Youth Center, from 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays for ages 10 to 17. And the open gym at Broadway Middle School, 1120 Broadway, offers recreational opportunities from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays, though availablity can be affected by other school activities. Tickets are available at Sunset Pool, and the resident’s card brings a discount in price.

New sessions of community classes begin every month at the Bob Chisholm Community Center at 1225 Avenue A, including martial arts, art and dance, among others.

Taekwondo for ages 8 to adult are held from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Led by Black Belt holder Dale Shafer, the sessions are $30 with a resident’s card and $45 for nonresidents.

Create your masterpiece in pottery, no matter your skill level, with the help of instructor Darren Gooch. Tools, glazes and five pounds of clay are provided with the fee of $30 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Sign up for morning or afternoon classes.

If you’ve just gotta dance, take ballroom dance from 7 to 7:55 p.m. and/or salsa dance from 8 to 8:55 p.m. Mondays, with dance instructor L.B. Bryant. These classes are $40 for residents and $60 for nonresidents, per person.

Scholarships are available for all programs. Pick up an application at the Sunset Pool lobby.
