ASTORIA/WARRENTON – The Astoria Bicentennial Celebration continues in August with Astoria Regatta, with a multitude of events including parades, races, foreign dignitaries, the Admiral’s Bicentennial Ball and a concert by country superstar Reba McEntire at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14.
McEntire has had 63 Top 10 country hits, a successful six-year television show, a stint on Broadway that garnered a Drama Critics Award, 15 American Music Awards, nine People’s Choice Awards, seven Country Music Association Awards, two Grammys and is one of only four entertainers in history to be honored with a National Artistic Achievement Award by the U.S. Congress.
Joining McEntire will be country singer/songwriter Phil Vassar. Vassar’s resume boasts six No. 1 hits for country artists including Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina and Collin Raye. He has also had three more No. 1 hits as an artist in his own right. He’s been named the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year twice and has taken top honors from the Academy of Country Music, Billboard and Music Row.
The concert will be held at the Camp Rilea Armed Forces Training Facility on U.S. Highway 101 between Astoria and Seaside. Maintained by the Oregon National Guard, Camp Rilea is also a favorite training site for Washington Guard units, and is frequently used by civilian organizations such as the Boy Scouts. The 234th Army Band will open the concert.
Tickets start at $50 for general admission grass seats and are available at the Liberty Theater box office at 1203 Commercial St. or through TicketsWest at (800) 992-TIXX or at Ticketswest.com. General admission tickets are also available from Barb and Megan Lewis at Area Properties, Dairy Maid, The Wine Haus in the Seaside Factory Outlet mall, all TLC Federal Credit Union locations and American Family Insurance, Adrian Birdeno.
Coming in September are more Bicentennial events, including fur trade encampments, an “Adventure in History Lecture Series” appearance by Jane Kirkpatrick, the Astoria Air Show, the Commercial Fishermen’s Festival and more, including two concerts at the Liberty Theater by folk legend Judy Collins.
