July festivities continue at Astoria Art Walk

ASTORIA – The arts light up the evening as downtown merchants and galleries hold the Second Saturday Art Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 9. Meet artists and mingle with friends and fellow art lovers while enjoying refreshments and new exhibits. The art walk is sponsored by the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association.
Art Walk maps are available at any of the participating businesses, or simply walk around downtown and look for the colorful pinwheels marking the locations.

Claude Kurtz, Bob Maury and Chris Hucke will demonstrate glass blowing from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. There are new creations on the shelves and they now offer polished Oregon beach agates by the ounce. As always, the birdie will be in the house (that’s Miss Kitty), as well as refreshments.

In celebration of creative work in fiber and textiles, HIPFiSHmonthly is sponsoring two mixed media artists in this new production office/gallery space. Anne Greenwood (www.annegreenwood.net) works with textiles and printmaking to create a physical linkage or record that connects ideas to human experience. Local artist, musician and teacher Renia Ydstie will present installation work using found material and paper that relates to the natural environment.

He and his wife have been the owners of the Wade Gallery at the Port of Ilwaco, Wash. since 2003, specializing in images of boats, trees, fog and all the things that make this area so stunningly beautiful.

In her workshop in Svensen, Susan Darms makes creatures from scraps of metal, found objects and hand-molded materials. She thinks of them as “homunculi,” or little people, envoys from a world of abandoned artifacts, salvaged textiles and industrial refuse. Some of them will be shown in the appropriately “recycled” culture of Astoria’s Vintage Hardware, with the exhibit running through July 29.

Street 14 Coffee will host Chinook, Wash. artist Alice Schuerman, during July. Schuerman is continually inspired to capture the living essence of the Pacific Northwest. Her recent works reflect her interest in native flowering plants. A limited edition poster, “A Feast for Garlic,” which recently won last month’s Garlic Festival poster contest, will be featured as part of her exhibit.
