NEHALEM – There will be a contra dance from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at White Clover Grange. Those new to the dance may want to come early for a free lesson at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5, with those older than 75 and younger than 12 admitted free.

Calling will be by Rich Goss, with lively dance music by Cascade Crossing. The band’s music is influenced by many styles, with touches of baroque, Celtic, traditional, southern and original tunes. Expect the unexpected, from hard-driving reels to smooth, mysterious jigs. Their style varies from a light touch to incredibly high energy and they can stop on a dime. Cascade Crossing consists of Carl Thor on piano, hammered dulcimer and drum; Sarah Goss on whistle, oboe and bass; and Lori Prime on fiddle. Because the band is coming from Portland, it is a good idea to check in advance if the weather is inclement. Call or text (503) 754-8432 for road conditions or log on to www.whiteclovergrange.com, where there is also a map to the location.

Contra dancing is a fun, easy way to enjoy recreational dance with friends and neighbors. No partner or experience are necessary and all dances are taught and easy to learn. Everyone is welcome. People are advised to wear loose, light, comfortable clothing, leather-soled shoes with low heels and to bring a water bottle and a handkerchief. Perfumes, colognes and other scented cosmetics are discouraged, out of respect to people who may have allergies. This is a smoke- and alcohol-free event.

Callers, musicians, sound managers and all-around helpers and childcare folks are asked to contact Frank Poliat at (503) 754-8432 to volunteer their help at the dance.

White Clover Grange is located at 36585 Oregon Highway 53, two miles east of U.S. Highway 101 and about a mile past the Mohler Co-Op grocery store and Nehalem Bay Winery.
