OCEAN PARK, Wash. – First there was Jack London’s “Call of the Wild” and “White Fang.” Now there’s “Boom Town Boy,” the true story of growing up in Alaska in the years before World War II.
Jack de Yonge – journalist, environmentalist, political advisor to Governor Mike Lowery and “an enormously entertaining pundit” – will hold a book signing from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Moby Dick Hotel. The Alaska native will offer his views about the current stormy elections of his former home state and will entertain guests with his witty insights. Also offered is dinner with the author after the book signing.
De Yonge is a retired newspaper reporter and editor, political-environmental activist, and avid fly-fisherman who currently lives in Concrete, Wash. His journalism career started at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and ended at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He was born in Fairbanks, attended Fairbanks High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alaska.
In between newspaper jobs, de Yonge served as executive director of the Alaska Statehood Commission, which examined state-federal relationships at a time when federal interventions troubled Alaskans. He also ran his own consulting firm for several decades.
De Yonge says one of his most satisfying achievements was helping to get the Skagit River system in Washington protected under the U.S. Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. He also helped persuade President Bill Clinton to preserve the Hanford Reach on the Columbia River by creating the Hanford Reach National Monument.
